HUM 002B American Music and Social Movements: Politics, Protest, and Propaganda
Elizabeth Campbell / CRN 72012
“Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music." Jimi Hendrix
In this course we will explore the music of social movements in the United States in the past century. Focusing mainly on popular music, we will study music related to women's suffrage, civil rights, environmentalism, cultural diplomacy, labor rights, and anti-War protests among other topics. Protest songs will form the core of the course materials and students will be introduced to methodologies of music analysis that go beyond interpreting song lyrics.
